The Wine & Roses fundraiser was held on May 6, 2022 to announce and honor the recipient of the Mary Johnston Award. The 6 pm social hour was followed by dinner in Klima Rose Hall. Catering by Maison Louisianne, Jazz sax by Eddie Spenser.

In 1997, Shreveport Resident Mary Johnston, wife of Louisiana Senator Bennett Johnston, was recognized by the American Rose Society for her significant role in the naming of the rose as America’s National Floral Emblem. Since then, others who have made important contributions to America’s Rose Garden have been honored with the Mary Johnston Award.

We are proud to present the award to two people who have demonstrated unprecedented commitment to America’s Rose Garden:

The 2022 honorees are Marilyn Wellan for her tireless dedication in leading the Great Garden Restoration Project since its inception in 2017 and Claude Graves, Chair of the American Rose Center Committee.

Thanks to their efforts, America’s Rose Garden has become a vibrant and vital asset to both the American Rose Center and to the Shreveport Community.

The Social Hour

Garden Dedications

On Saturday, May 7, we held a garden tour and dedicated new gardens.

We began the tour at the Watkins Reflection Pool and walked through the Shanley-DelVecchio Garden Gate Pavilion.

The tour continued through McFarland Plaza to the First Circle – The Charles Beaird Garden – of 21st Century roses and then on through the Second Circle – the Virginia Shehee Garden – of 20th Century roses.

We dedicated the Third Circle – The Will Radler Garden, donated by William J Radler, which will showcase shrub roses of every type and Will shared some thoughts.

We dedicated the Fourth Circle – The Franks Garden, donated by the Alta & John Franks Foundation – which will feature heritage roses of all types.

We then dedicated the Wellan Garden Rose Circles, in honor of Myron & Marilyn Wellan. Marilyn has served as Project Coordinator of the Great Garden Restoration from 2017-2022.

We finished the day by unveiling the Donor wall.

The day was capped off by a celebration of the Great Garden Restoration Project with cake and champagne provided by Joe and Carrie Bergs.

MODERN ROSES

CHRISTMAS CARDS TO THE COMMUNITY

CCC art program began 32 years ago to create a unique opportunity for highlighting the creative talents of local school students. We give participating schools a 4′x8′ piece of plywood to make their masterpiece on. The cards are judged by area artists and business people. Awards are given to First, Second and Third places in Elementary, Middle and High School divisions. A Best of Show is also awarded.

August 1: Distribution of entry packets to Bossier, Caddo and DeSoto schools.

August 30, 5 PM: Deadline for entries to qualify for FREE sheet of plywood. Caddo Parish School Board Warehouse picks up wood and delivers to participating schools.

September 3-6: Plywood available for pick up.

November 4-7: Caddo and Bossier Parish School Board Warehouses pick up completed cards and delivers to ARC.

November 8, 5 PM: Drop off deadline. Cards received after this date are accepted, but not eligible for judging. Please drop off cards at Administration Building in back of American Rose Center. Please sign that you have dropped it off.

November 14-15: Card judging at the American Rose Center.

November 18: Card winners notified, invited to reception.

November 21: Card Winner Reception. Please RSVP by Nov. 16, 4 PM. Guests must RSVP to beth@rose.org

November 21: Card winners announced at www.christmasinroseland.org and via email to winners, press release to local and regional press outlets.

December 13: People’s Choice Winner announced at www.christmasinroseland.org and via email to winners, press release to local and regional press outlets.

January 6-10, 2024: Cards may be retrieved at the American Rose Center. Please sign that you have picked up your card. Cards not retrieved by 1/10/24 will be used for projects at ARC.

Christmas in Roseland is the largest fundraiser for the American Rose Center, located at 8877 Jefferson Paige Rd in Shreveport. Dates for 2023 are Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from November 24 – December 17 and nightly from December 18 – December 23. Hours are 5:30 pm through 10:00 pm.

Gate Helper: OUTSIDE Assist Gate Manager with distributing wrist bands/head count, (2-4 needed per night)

Photo Helper: assist photographer in posing guests having photo taken with Santa in Gift Shop, (1 needed per night)

Gift Shop Assistant: Assist Gift Shop in helping customers, bagging items & helping customers, (1 needed per night)

Marshmallow Pit Assistant: OUTSIDE Assist guests at Marshmallow/S’more station, (2 needed per night)

Crosswalk Supervisor: OUTSIDE assist guests crossing roadway to insure safety, (2-4 needed per night)

Parking Lot Helper: OUTSIDE assist parking lot supervisor in directing guests in parking lot, (2-4 needed per night)

Propose to Register with a Generic Name

If you are proposing to register the rose variety with a generic name which includes the surname of an individual or the registered name of an organization, please submit a letter of authorization from said individual (or appropriate family member) or organization.
